California Governor Signs Law Excusing Objecting Clergy From Performing Same-Sex Weddings

In California, on Sept. 30, Gov. Jerry Brown signed SB 1140 making it clear that clergy who object to same-sex marriage need not perform same-sex ceremonies.  The new law defines marriage as a civil, not a religious, contract. It also provides that no member of the clergy shall be required to solemnize a marriage that is contrary to his or her faith. Refusal to do so will not affect the tax exempt status of any entity.
